About the Talk 關於演講
In view of the increasing awareness of mental health needs in youth, we developed an evidence-based and school-based program to improve students’ mental wellbeing and psychological flexibility. The model of the brief group intervention is premised on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) that promotes cognitive defusion, reduces emotional avoidance, and encourages committed, value-based actions. Four group sessions were offered to 47 secondary school students who reported to have mild to moderate level of depressive or anxiety symptoms or at least moderate level of perceived stress. In this talk, the focus will be placed on the experience of developing a psychological intervention in a school setting. Preliminary study results will be presented. Discussion in a broader context in relation to the role of clinical psychologists, social workers, and counseling professionals in Hong Kong will also be discussed.
